SCOUTS 100 KM WALKATHON
MASHONALAND EAST PROVINCE
SATURDAY 28 OCTOBER 2017

Scouts from all corners of the country converged in the Mashonaland East Province for a 100km walkathon.
Scouts are “a movement that aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the outdoors and survival skills.”
Founded by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, Scouts’ key initiatives are those of creating active members of society, cultivating lifelong skills and values in youths, youth empowerment and engagement in peace. In the same light Scouts Association of Zimbabwe organised a very successful 100km walkathon that did not only campaign for a green environment also took examplery steps of tree planting. The walkathon sought to cultivate values of afforestation and protection of the environment, thereby recruiting green ambassadors amongst Scouts across the country and eye witnesses.
Guided by principles of the love of peace, environment and development, Scouts together with Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe Trust took a tree planting initiative to cultivate peace between humans and nature by taking a corrective measure to the effects of deforestation.

Driven by a goal to see a developed environment endowed by its trees that in turn have nutritional and commercial benefits the participants of the walkathon took a participatory approach to developing sustainable forests.
Also providing their support through voluntary participation in the walkathon was the Pachikoro organisation, EMA, National Junior Councils Association and Zimbabwe United Nations Association. Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe Trust donated one thousand Trees which were planted by a zealous scout’s team and community members in Mashonaland East Province. In attendance from the Zimbabwe Scouts Association amongst others were Mr Paddington Johannes (M.O.P Coodinator) and Jonasi Musariri (Mash East Province).
